International Workshop for Teaching Debate with/beyond COVID-19

Prof. Narahiko Inoue

Dr. Zompetti teaches courses in civic engagement, rhetoric, and argumentation around the world. In this webinar, he will talk about debate education in the US, which will be compared with the situations in other countries where he has taught. He will also discuss the relationship between competitive debating and political debate/rhetoric drawing on some examples from rhetoric of politicians including Donald Trump.

9:40-10:40. Lecture (Joseph Zompetti)
Some points to be covered (subject to change):
(1) Latest trends in competitive debating in the US.
(2) Do training and practicing competitive debating encourage/exaggerate/ reinforce polarization in the US society?
(3) Debating with/beyond COVID-19.
(4) Debating and SDGs

10:40-11:00 Break
11:00-11:45 Discussion (Participants are encouraged to share thier ideas).
11:45-11:50 Closing/Introduction to the ISTD conference from the afternoon.
