Pasuk PHONGPAICHIT (Professor of Chulalongkorn University)and Chris BAKER (Independent Scholar) will be the featured speakers.

On Sunday, November 17, 2024, the Institute for Asian and Oceanian Studies at Kyushu University, in collaboration with Fukuoka City and the Fukuoka City International Foundation, will host an academic exchange program. This program features presentations by past recipients of the Fukuoka Prize and is titled “Love, Loss and Landscape: The Oldest Thai Poems”.
There are five long Thai poems which are now reckoned to be the oldest which have survived until today. One is about war but the four others are above love, loss and separation from a lover, travel, and landscape. The exact dates, authors, and even the titles are unknown. They are full of passion and beauty, and they deserve to be better known. Professor Pasuk Phongpaichit from Chulalongkorn University and historian Chris Baker have together translated and published all five works into English. In this talk, we will read some key passages and discuss what makes these works distinctive and what they tell us about Siam half a millennium ago.
