An earlier seminar hosted by the Education University of Hong Kong focused on educational technology. This seminar will reflect more broadly on the central, organizing concept of the report, “A New Social Contract for Education”, and on the United Nation’s related calls for education to play a socially “transformative” role.

The UNESCO Chair in Education for Peace, Social Justice and Global Citizenship, in association with the Comparative Education Society of Asia (CESA), proposes a seminar that interrogates the agenda for social transformation through education. We will invite distinguished speakers from Asia and beyond to share their views on the potential – and limitations – of education as a vehicle for achieving social justice and sustainable development. Guiding the discussion will be the question of whether there is a need to rebalance public debate towards a greater focus on the social changes required to realize a vision of education that prioritizes human dignity and agency. In other words, do we need to pay greater attention to the need for social change in order to transform education, as well as to the potential for education to transform society?

The theme of the proposed seminar is “Challenges to Realising a Transformative Vision of Education: Asian Perspectives”. The seminar will begin with an exposition of the central messages of the Futures of Education report, “Reimagining our futures together”, with its call for a new “Social Contract for Education”. Eminent scholars with expertise on various Asian societies will then share their reflections on what would need to change in order for a transformative vision of education to be realized. The panelists will then debate and field questions from the audience, who will also be invited to share brief observations based on their own experience.

Registration

Advanced registration required
[Online]
*Please register at the following link.
https://forms.gle/UhFUK9pZFe8yED5G8
Registration period：2023.12.15 [Fri] – 2024.01.12 [Fri]

Inquiries

Name: CHEN SICONG (Faculty of Human-Environment Studies)
Mail: chen.sicong.047★m.kyushu-u.ac.jp
Please replace ★ with @

Website
https://www.ku-unescochair.com/
https://www.kyushu-u.ac.jp/en/events/view/437

Challenges to Realising a Transformative Vision of Education: Asian Perspectives 　On January 13, 2024, there will be an international seminar in Fukuoka to discuss the report of UNESCO’s Futures of Education Commission.
