Associate professor Munetoshi Maruyama of Kyushu University Museum receives the 2024 Education Award by the Zoological Society of Japan

On June 13, 2024, Associate Professor Munetoshi Maruyama of the Kyushu University Museum was honored with the 2024 Education Award by the Zoological Society of Japan. He was selected for his outstanding work in advancing public understanding of insect diversity through his publications and exhibitions.

The Education Award by Zoological Society of Japan commends individuals or organizations who have significantly contributed to public understanding and awareness of zoology through active educational activities. Previous recipients include notable figures such as writer Masanori Hata, former director of Ueno Zoo and Aquarium Minoru Yajima, and Tokyo Institute of Technology Honorary Professor Tatsuo Motokawa.

Munetoshi Maruyama says,

“Motivated by a desire to share the diversity and magnificence of insects, and to increase the number of insect lovers, I have been actively involved in insect education through books, exhibitions, and media appearances.

“In recent years, I have had the opportunity to create educational pictorial books like those I enjoyed as a child. At the Kyushu University Museum, we annually host insect exhibitions, focusing on lesser-known species through various trials and errors. Additionally, I have participated in the TV program “Kids Science Phone Discussions” produced by NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation), offering insect-related insights through media channels.

“I am deeply honored and proud that these activities have been recognized, leading to this award. At same time, I would like to express my profound gratitude to all those who have supported my work. The Kyushu University Museum is set for a major renovation in a few years, which will bring about a significant transformation. As a faculty member of the museum, I aim to apply this experience to further enhance our connection between the university and the public.”

The award ceremony and lecture will take place on September 13, 2024, during the 95th Annual Meeting of the Zoological Society of Japan, at Nagasaki University’s Bunkyo Campus.
